About me

Hey! this is Sara, the person who runs Hola Lola Spanish.

I could tell you:
I have a Bachelor's degree in Catalan Philology (Language and Literature) and a Master's degree in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language. I could tell you that I am passionate about living abroad and I adapt very well to international atmospheres: I lived in London for a summer, I lived in Amsterdam for almost 7 years and at the moment you are reading this, I could be somewhere else, probably in an European capital. How cool it is to be in this era where we can give/take quality Spanish lessons just with a laptop and a wifi connection, right? ;)

But let’s start from the beginning…

I was born in 1990 in Barcelona and I was raised in Vilanova i la Geltrú, a beautiful town near Barcelona.

There I enjoyed that long mediterranean summers at the beach, the catalan folklore such as our carnival or our “festa major” (have you ever seen that human towers called “castellers”?) and many other things like patatas bravas and paellas every weekend.

I confess I was always this sort of sensitive and daydreamer girl who was super curious about other cultures and countries.

For example, I remember that, when I was a kid, one of my favorite hobbies was to translate songs from English into Spanish.
Of course I did it using the paper dictionary since at that moment there were no smartphones — and not even the internet at many houses yet! But in general, I used to love everything that was related to languages.
I don’t have a picture related to that so I will show you a cute picture of me at that age (around 11) with my baby dog — I am sure his face will melt you.

So once I started college and I had to go every day to Barcelona (capital) — where I started to feel that “big city life” vibes —, I started to fantasize about living abroad once I would have finished my degree.
At that time I also made a few short trips around European cities with my college friends and I confirmed to myself even more how much I love the vibrant atmosphere and the freneticism of the big cities.

I am also very stubborn so of course I did it!

At the age of 25 I went to London for a summer to work as an au pair. At the age of 27 I flew to the Netherlands where I also worked as an au pair for one and a half year.

After that, I decided to stay for a long term because I was completely in love with Amsterdam. During my time in Amsterdam, I started to work as a Spanish teacher for foreign people in different places and contexts.

I also completed the Masters and I started to develop my project “Hola Lola Spanish”.

Other secrets about me:

I love sleeping. I am this sort of person that can sleep easily for 9 or 10 hours. Nothing better than to go to sleep without any alarm clock.
I dance bachata and salsa. Taking classes weekly and dancing in socials is my main hobby.
I have been meat free since I was 24.
I enjoy having “me time”. Despite the fact that I can be very sociable and I also love this “actress” part of being a teacher, I recharge batteries by being alone.
I love writing more than reading. It’s more likely that I have a notebook in my bag than a book. It’s very easy for me to make rhymes and when I am angry or sad, I express myself by writing “Sara’s raps”.
But I still like reading, especially books about spirituality, human behavior and World War II.
For the movies I am quite simple, I still feel like a teenager. I love romantic comedies and the sort of humor of American Pie. My favorite movie is still “Eat pray love”: I watched it more than 20 times!
Oh, I also love musicals because they have everything I like to see: people acting, singing and dancing. My favorite one is “The Miserables” from the novel of Victor Hugo. Do you hear the people sing…? (goosebumps!)
